Filiform Warts: What They Are and How They Are Treated

A type of wart that is not uncommon, yet tends to alarm patients the moment they see it...

I recently saw two cases back to back — both patients came in quite worried because the lesions had an irregular shape and were growing quickly.

This long-overdue doctor's column is meant to put your mind at ease.

Filiform Warts: What They Are and How They Are Treated

Filiform warts typically appear on the scalp, eyelids, and around the mouth. Because they tend to grow quickly, most patients arrive at the clinic feeling quite anxious.

These distinctively shaped warts — known as filiform warts (사상사마귀) — are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Because of this, they can spread to other areas of the body and can also be transmitted to other people.

Their somewhat irregular surface and characteristic thread-like appearance understandably startles many people, but filiform warts are a benign condition and carry no serious health risk.

Removal is usually sought for cosmetic reasons.

Removal is performed with a CO₂ laser and is generally a very straightforward procedure.

Most patients experience no symptoms, though occasional itching has been reported in some cases.

If you notice a lesion like this on your face or scalp, there is no need to panic — it can be removed simply and easily. ^^
