My shoulder tension had become so severe, with significant pain, that I finally went in for trapezius Botox after a long gap.

Between heavy laser use and long hours at a computer, my right trapezius had become completely rigid. Whenever I went to work out or get a massage, everyone was surprised by just how rock-hard the muscle knots were.

I do get trapezius Botox on a fairly regular basis, and it would be better to come in earlier as a preventive measure — but somehow, probably due to time constraints, I always end up waiting until the knots are extremely hard and the pain is unbearable before I finally make an appointment.

When shoulder pain or muscle tension is severe, the trapezius muscle (shown in red above) is often excessively contracted — and that was exactly my situation.

Because Botox works by relaxing muscles, it can provide significant pain relief in cases where pain is caused by excessive muscle contraction.

From an aesthetic standpoint, reducing the trapezius muscle creates a softer shoulder line and gives the neck a longer, more slender appearance. For this reason, trapezius Botox tends to be popular in the lead-up to summer or before a wedding.

My own reason for getting it is the pain — but I won't deny that my shoulder line looks much nicer afterward too.

As you can see from the image, the trapezius is a very large muscle that runs in a triangular shape from the neck all the way down the back.

The area we typically target with Botox is marked with a circle in the photo above. This is the region that contracts most intensely, where pain is felt most acutely, and — when overdeveloped — where the muscle most noticeably affects the shoulder line.

Depending on muscle size, the dosage for trapezius Botox generally ranges from 100 to 200 units, and results typically become visible about one month after treatment.

I occasionally receive questions about side effects of trapezius Botox.

When raising the arm above shoulder height, some patients may notice a slight reduction in arm strength; however, this is generally not significant enough to interfere with daily activities.

Because the trapezius is such a large muscle, reducing one portion of it (the circled area) can cause the body to compensate by recruiting more tension in the remaining parts of the muscle.

What this means in practice is that some patients report increased tension or aching in the upper back — the area indicated by the yellow arrows above.

The key advantage of Botox, however, is that regardless of any temporary effects, everything returns to its original state over time. If you experience some discomfort in a different area, or notice a slight decrease in arm strength, it will fully resolve within two to three months.

For anyone dealing with severe shoulder muscle tension and pain, or for those who want a softer, more refined shoulder line, trapezius Botox is something I genuinely recommend.
